Day Hiking Checklist
Have you ever gone day hiking? Been on any sort of expedition? When heading into a national park, such as Grand Teton or Yellowstone, a quick trip to REI or Columbia Sportswear can have you properly equipped in no time.
Imagine having a personal shopper with all the knowledge you need to get through a day hike or two. When you walk into REI, this is exactly what you will find. Their employees have incredible wisdom and expertise in the outdoor world and can give you recommendations based on your itinerary and personal taste.
After visiting REI and Columbia, you can rest well knowing you will have all the clothing and accessories for a day of hiking.
Here is my Day Hiking Checklist to help you pack for your next hike:
- Backpack (with inner hydration pocket is optional, but most helpful)
- Minimalist daypack
- Trekking poles
- Rain pants
- Rain jacket
- Sun hat with brim or cap
- Wicking top and bottom
- Hiking pants
- Hiking shorts
- Biking shorts (if your day includes biking)
- T-shirts (remember your elements: no cotton and you will want to layer)
- Long sleeve shirt
- Long underwear
- Wool socks (fabric is breathable and stretches for durability)
- Water-friendly shoes
- Hiking shoes
- Bug spray
- Lip balm
- Bear spray
I am sure this list doesn’t meet everyone’s needs, but hopefully it’ll give you a good place to start. Your needs will vary depending on the type of expedition you are taking. Temperature, terrain, and other variables will grow or shorten your checklist.
What is a must-have on your day hiking checklist?
A HUGE thank you to both REI and Columbia for sponsoring the items I needed for the #ALEx14 Expedition. Be sure to follow the #ALEx14 hashtag on social media to see how I put the items to good use!
